It is in the latest news of local Singapore issue that this country is working to cultivate and send its first athletes to the 2014 Wniter Olympic Games, in Sochi, Russia. This is addressed by Mr Teo Ser Luck on Friday.

In my virepoint, I think that it is totally unnecessary. It is all known that Singapore is a small island located on the equator. It is summer all year around. here you can find nothing related to "cold" or "winter". People here are adapted to this kind of life. They are born to wear the charming short pants and the unique flip-flop to get to everywhere. The summer life keeps accompany with them since they were born in Singapore. It is so astonishing and and impenetrable that why Singapore is planning to produce a winter games athlete.

Maybe they want to show that the athletes in Singapore can make a miracle in such way of showing themselves in Winter games. Or they want to show that they can do well in all kinds of fields in sports? But I consider it something meaningless. They should devote themselves to Summer Games which they know better rather than the Winter Games which they are not familiar with at all. Usually, if you want to be good at everything, then the consequence will be that you are good at nothing. It is more important to concentrate rather than to expand. There are so many countries which can produce countless brilliant athletes in Winter Games. So it is actually not that influential to add a Singapore athlete in the Winter Games.

Also, cultivating a athlete is not something so simple. It will last for many years and it costs a great amount of energy and human source. Of course, it needs a lot of money for cultivating every single athlete. And most of the time, you invest the money without getting any reward. Here comes the question: why not using the money more wisely? Why not do something rewarding?

Those above is the my viewpoints concerning this curent issue of Singapore.

  1. At first I would say that your point of view is reasonable in some aspects. However, to me, I will clap for this decision. I think the meaning of sports should be more than award and glory. Participation should be more important than achievement in Olympic Games, isn’t it? So we should welcome and encourage the new members to join the family of winter Olympic. Especially Singapore, a tropical country, is a good model to show the spirits of Olympics. What is more if people love winter games, even if he was born in tropical area, they should also be able to enjoy the great fun of winter games. In addition, Singapore is a prosperous country with a good tradition of physical exercise. To promote and cultivate winter sports can enrich the life of citizens. Last but not least, Olympic Games is a huge platform of international communication. Sending athletes to winter Olympic Games is a good way to build up Singapore’s reputation. As a conclusion I strongly support this determination of cultivating athletes and join winter Olympic Games. by Harry

  2. Though the participation of Singaporeana in Winter Olympics seems to be unbelievable and unnecessary, I am really in support of them. I think winning is not the only in the but the spirit of taking challengs is more precious especially in this case where singaporeans are taking this formidable task. I really appreciate their spirit.Besides, i think they will also bring a lot of joy to people all around the world.

What you said about concentration on a few subjects rather than too much of them makes sense. However, in this case, i think their courage to step in the field which is totally strange to them is much more valuable. So, i strongly support their decision and hope them have good performances in the games.

I cannot totally agree with your opinions, especially you pointed out “it is totally unnecessary”.
Admittedly, it is a great challenge for Singapore to cultivate and send its first athletes to the Winter Olympic Games. However, it is also a great chance for Singapore to develop sports. It is a milestone to develop new sports items. It also provides a good opportunity for Singapore athletes to learn experience in the Winter Olympic Games. Although Singapore may not get a good result in the Olympics, taking participant in it is still very meaningful. Above all, the important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part. As long as Singapore participates, it is a good progress compared with before, and it also promotes international technical and cultural exchanges. Every country takes it an honor to participate in Olympics, and it is a good chance to show to the world as well.
Singapore is located in the tropics, thus it is not superior or competitive in those events in winter Olympics. With advanced technology, Singapore can build good facilities and the required environment for athletes. Singapore still can have a try but not just give up in developing the sports. That is a positive attitude. Investment in promoting sports and cultivating athletes is meaningful. Many countries invest much in it. As I said above, countries take it a great honor to participate in Olympics.
